neighborhoods wordle 2016How many neighborhoods are there in New York City? Estimates range from 248 by the Department of Finance to one neighborhood activist’s claim of over 500. Why the disparity? First, neighborhoods are not part of the city’s formal political geography which consists of the 5 boroughs, 59 community districts, and city, state, and federal election districts. Second, new neighborhoods might arise from the imagination of civic groups or real estate development initiatives. And if the name catches on, there’s a new neighborhood. Finally, sometimes a neighborhood gets absorbed by a more popular nearby one.

The actual number is always in flux but in anticipation of a neighborhoods initiative the city government reserved the following 385 neighborhood names.

A few notes about the neighborhood names. First, these are not the only neighborhood names. If you’re interested in a developing a neighborhood site and city refuses you the name (the qualifications are both broad and deep), one can apply for a “parallel” site. For example, if Harlem.nyc is unavailable, apply for BeautifulHarlem.nyc.

Second, in assigning neighborhood names we recommend acquiring “name clouds” to diminish resident confusion – like that caused by the “parallel” sites. Adopting this policy would have the recipient of Greenwich Village acquire greenwich-village.nyc as well as greenwichvillage.nyc.

Finally, if you’re not sure of your neighborhood, see this page from the City Planning Commission where you can download high and low resolution maps .
